Madeira has a few renowned dishes, like espetada, pastéis de nata and more. I’ve put together a list of my top 5 favourite foods whilst we’ve been in Madeira.
- Pastéis de nata
- Espetada from Curral da Freiras
- Prego no Bolo do Caco
- Santo da Serra Market foods
- Bolo do arroz
Pastéis de nata are everywhere; in nearly every bakery you’ll find these custard tarts. They certainly lived up to my expectations.

These espetada were both beef and chicken skewers, 1 metre tall and with heavenly sides. Absolutely delicious. The restaurant was also in a brilliant spot halfway up a mountain, with partial views of Nuns’ Valley.

From the first day to the last I set myself on a course to find the best prego. These simple meat sandwiches are composed of meat, bolo do caco (Madeiran garlic bread), tomato, lettuce, cheese and sometimes egg. Mmm.

Santo da Serra Market has been one of the best places to visit. Mostly because of the succulent foods there. With toasty meat buns there, biscuit cake here, brownie over there and poncha everywhere, it was cheapish, tasty and warming.
Bolo do arroz is a Madeiran savoury muffin. Luckily for me, they normally sprinkle sugar on top to sweeten them. With just the plain muffin and sugar, it is surprisingly delicious. I simply gorged myself on them.

Food is one of my biggest occupations, and Madeira has satisfactorily provided it.
