Stuck in Porto, Part II

Making the most of our Porto predicament

After yesterday’s shenanigans, we woke up to the stress of trying to get out of Porto. But not before a scrumptious breakfast buffet full of pastéis de nata, bolos de arroz and more goodies. We then took a taxi back to the airport.

Meeting this great airport again, Mum and Dad set about finding us a new flight to Morocco, and just in time. We bagged the last three seats on a plane … but it was 5 days away. Not great, but better than never.

We then proceeded to find accommodation for reasonable prices. Sorted, we took yet another taxi to our new hotel in Porto, where we left our bags and set off down to the Miradouro da Vitoria overlooking Porto’s Douro River.

The slight declines and inclines were nothing for our Madeiran knees. Along the way, there were many patterned houses bordering the narrow streets. Reaching the lookout, we could see the tops of the houses stretching towards the bustling banks of the Douro.

Coming back, we stopped in Cafe Porto do Olival which was right next to the amazing Torre dos Clérigos. We all had stuffed buns – Mum had fish, Dad octopus and I had tuna. As well as 5 litres of beer and juice.

Next to Torre dos Clérigos also happened to be the Amorino ice cream shop, where I had a delicious and massive pistachio, mango and raspberry ice cream whilst looking at the stunningly tall tower. Not only was it the best ice cream I’ve ever had, but they let you choose as many flavours as you want! You just get smaller and smaller scoops with more and more flavours, all shaped like a flower. I like this strategy very very much.

We also wandered around the amazing streets. With tilework, artwork and sculptures, it was my first taste of European styles. Stacked apartments of different colours twisting round these narrow streets were a sight to behold.

I think we all enjoyed this stress-free afternoon.
